Los Angeles

Injuries: No more. Nose healing nicely, thankyou.

Beard status: He shaved it all off. Decided it should only be a holiday beard and so nearly 2 weeks head start is cheating slightly.

So we arrived in LA after a tediously long flight, made longer by delays at Heathrow. 1st we had to wait for another plane to arrive as it had passengers needing to get the connecting flight, then Virgin had screwed up the seating plan and split families up meaning there were parentless children all over the plane. We were asked if we'd move from our awful ones in the middle of a row of 4 to a nice window and aisle pair. We did not look a gift horse in the mouth and jumped up straight away.

Arrived in LA in the evening (but about 4am england time). It was dark so didn't see much of the city. Next morning I decided a priority would be to go somewhere where we'd be able to get a nice photo of the Hollywood sign, as we were staying on Hollywood Blvd we knew we wouldn't have to go too far. Then Colin opened the curtains in the room and there it was just up the hill (as you can see from the photo). How cool!

Had 2 great days exploring LA. First day we had a walk along the walk of fame, where all the stars are on the pavement. Then went up to a lovely park called Griffith park where there is an observatory with some huge telescopes. In the afternoon we went up to the hotel pool on the roof but was too intimidated by the beautiful, bikini clad people of LA (well the girls anyway!) to swim. It was definitely more of a place to see and be seen than to swim, but never mind. We went to the bar instead!

Yesterday we went to Warner Bros studios where we had a tour. Colin spotted 2 of the stars from the show The Mentallist. Kim was looking the other way and didn't.

Today we picked up the hire car and drove up pacific highway 1 which is an amazing drive up the coast. We found a motel in a small town nearly half way to San Francisco where we're spending tonight. Its not half as glamourous as the hollywood hotel but its convenient and we have to economise sometimes.

We'll update while we're in SF hopefully. Will put some more photos on soon too.

And they're off!!!

So after years of planning and months of meticulous preparation we are finally about to leave for the airport to start our round the world adventure. For those who don't know, we are going to california first, followed by Japan, New Zealand, Australia and finally Thailand in the space of the next 101 days.
So today started well. We were all packed and ready ages before we needed to be ready. Then disaster struck! While cleaning the kitchen Colin shut the kitchen door. Problem was we couldn't open it again. It had jammed. We had just 45 mins before the taxi was due to arrive so we had to act fast. It's not the 1st door to have broken on us so we knew all we needed was a coat hanger to hook through. Sadly these are in short supply in the kitchen so we improvised with 2 knives. This resulted in me receiving a small knife wound to my nose!! Don't ask how, you had to be there.
Anyway, I'm not bleeding to death over the keyboard as i type so think I'll survive. Now we're waiting for the cab (all doors being left open until the last minute) and we'll soon be on our way.

Over the next few months we'll try to keep you up to date on what we're up to, where we are, if Colin's injured me in any other way and, of course, how long the 'hairy one's' beard has grown!! Of course, due to lack of time but mostly sheer laziness this may not be as frequent as we'd like, but we will try.
Bye for now xx
